The Challenge

BMI Group required a high-capacity Construction & Demolition (C&D) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) waste recycling facility capable of processing mixed waste streams efficiently while improving material recovery, reducing landfill dependency, and maintaining operational uptime.

The project demanded:

· A robust system capable of processing up to 60 tonnes per hour

· Efficient separation of mixed waste materials including metals, aggregates, timber, plastics, and fines

· Use of air density separators to reduced manual handling and labour dependency

· High plant reliability with minimal bottlenecks and downtime

· A compact yet efficient layout suitable for operational flow and future scalability

· Improved recovery rates and cleaner recyclable outputs to support sustainability targets and evolving environmental legislation

BMI also required a trusted engineering partner capable of delivering a fully integrated solution including design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and aftersales support.

The Solution

Turmec designed and supplied a bespoke 60TPH recycling system engineered specifically for BMI Group’s operational requirements in Queensland, Australia.

The solution included:

· Primary Shredder for heavy-duty waste size reduction

· Advanced waste screening systems including a primary waste screen and secondary fines screen.

· Advanced air density separators which are used to split the material according to their density, reducing the need for manual sorting.

The plant was designed with automation and operational efficiency at its core, helping BMI improve recovery performance while reducing reliance on landfill disposal.

The Outcome

The facility is expected to:

· Process up to 60TPH of mixed C&D/C&I waste

· Achieve high recovery rates across valuable recyclables including metals, aggregates, timber, plastics, and fines

· Significantly reduce waste sent to landfill

· Deliver clean material streams for resale and reuse

· Increase operational efficiency while reducing manual labour requirements

· Support BMI Group’s sustainability goals and long-term environmental compliance strategy

The facility demonstrates Turmec’s capability to deliver large-scale, automated recycling systems that combine engineering innovation, high throughput performance, and environmental responsibility.
