C&D/C&I
70
Turmec & North American Partners, Viably completed their first joint project a MRF designed to process over 150,000 tons of C&D and C&I waste annually drawn from the greater Cleveland area. The facility will operate with an initial targeted recovery rate of at least 70%, drastically reducing the volume of C&D waste being sent to landfills, therefore solving waste challenges throughout the Greater Cleveland Area
The Goal:
*Transform 150,000tph mixed C&D and C&I waste into clean, recoverable materials
*Maximise recovery while ensuring long-term operational reliability
*Divert recyclable materials away from landfill
The Challenge
Mixed construction and commercial waste streams are unpredictable, contaminated, and difficult to process efficiently.
Boyas needed a system that could:
- Handle high volumes (70 TPH)
- Deliver consistent material separation
- Future-proof operations with upgrade flexibility
The Turmec Solution
Turmec designed installed and commissioned a fully integrated processing system, combining advanced mechanical and separation technologies with smart material flow design.
Process Overview and Performance Summary
The Boyas Recycling facility is built around a highly efficient, multi-stage process designed to maximise recovery and ensure consistent material quality.
Material is first stabilised through intelligent pre-processing, where a primary sizer and long object separator regulate input size and remove problematic oversized items. This creates a smooth, controlled material flow and protects downstream equipment from disruption.
Early-stage ferrous removal using a heavy-duty overband magnet ensures cleaner processing from the outset, reducing wear and improving overall system efficiency.
Advanced screening technology then separates finer fractions, allowing valuable materials to be recovered more effectively. This is followed by a combination of air density separation and eddy current technology, which isolates aggregates and recovers non-ferrous metals.
Further refinement is achieved through a multi-stage separation process, including double drum density separation, ballistic separation, and optical sorting. This enables the recovery of high-value materials such as A-grade timber, plastics, and metals across multiple streams.
Final quality control is delivered through strategically placed manual picking stations, ensuring all outputs meet market-ready standards with minimal contamination.
Outcome
- Throughput of 70 tonnes per hour
- High recovery rates across multiple material streams
- Reduced downtime through effective pre-processing
- Consistent production of clean, reusable materials
The Boyas facility demonstrates how a well-engineered system can transform complex waste streams into valuable resources efficiently and reliably, setting a benchmark for modern recycling operations.
Future-Ready by Design
The Boyas plant includes built-in upgrade pathways, including:
