At Port Clarence, it was required to completely transform an existing biomass fuel handling system into a modern Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) handling facility. Rather than designing a new plant from scratch, Turmec was tasked with engineering a solution that worked around existing infrastructure. The result is a fully integrated RDF handling system that maximises reliability, improves maintenance accessibility, extends the lifespan of the facility and supports future operational growth.

The Challenge

The existing biomass handling system was not designed to handle RDF.

It required a complete conversion to RDF processing while maintaining the integrity of the existing plant.

The project required:

  • Removal of the existing biomass handling equipment
  • Integration with existing infrastructure
  • Long-term durability
  • Improved maintenance access
  • Full operational redundancy
  • Minimal future downtime

Rather than simply replacing conveyors, Turmec redesigned the entire fuel handling process.

The Turmec Solution

Turmec engineered an entirely new RDF handling system centred around a bespoke structural steel lattice supporting a dual conveyor arrangement running from the fuel reception hall to the incinerator feed.

Every element was designed to improve reliability, accessibility and long-term performance.

The installation included:

  • Bespoke structural steel framework
  • Twin enclosed conveyor systems
  • RDF reception walking floors
  • Ash handling equipment
  • Radial ash storage conveyor
  • Maintenance walkways
  • GRP flooring
  • Integrated lighting
  • Electrical containment
  • Odour control ducting
  • MCC cable routes
  • Sensor systems
  • Access platforms

All structural steel was fabricated to EN1090 standards and hot-dip galvanised to EN ISO 1461, ensuring exceptional durability within the harsh industrial environment.

Outcome

The Port Clarence RDF Upgrade successfully transformed the existing biomass handling facility into a modern, reliable RDF fuel handling system without the need for complete reconstruction. By integrating a bespoke structural steel framework, a fully redundant dual-conveyor system, and innovative maintenance features, Turmec improved operational reliability, reduced downtime, and extended the life of the facility. The project also enhanced energy recovery, supported sustainability goals, and delivered a future-proof solution designed for long-term performance.
