Frequently Asked Questions

Turmec designs, manufactures, installs and supports advanced waste recycling and material recovery systems for customers around the world.

Every Turmec solution is engineered around the customer’s waste stream, required throughput, available space, recovery objectives and future growth plans. Our focus is simple: recover more valuable material, reduce reliance on landfill, improve operational efficiency and maximise the long-term value of your recycling operation.

From new turnkey recycling facilities to upgrades and automation of existing plants, Turmec combines engineering expertise with advanced sorting technology to deliver high-performance waste processing solutions.

Turmec designs recycling systems for a wide range of waste streams and other matierals, including:

  • Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste
  • Commercial & Industrial (C&I) waste
  • Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
  • Mixed Dry Recyclables (MDR/DMR)
  • Packaging and recyclable materials
  • Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)
  • Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)
  • Wood and biomass
  • Glass, ash and other specialist materials

Because no two waste streams are the same, Turmec plants are custom designed rather than based on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Increasing recovery normally starts with understanding where valuable material is currently being lost.

Turmec analyses your incoming material, existing process, throughput, contamination levels and current outputs to identify opportunities for improvement.

Solutions can include improved material separation, screening, optical sorting, metal recovery, density separation, fines processing and greater automation.

By creating cleaner, better-separated material streams, operators can recover more saleable commodities while reducing the residual material requiring disposal.

The key is to identify recoverable value before material reaches the residual waste stream.

A Turmec recycling solution can separate materials such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, aggregates, plastics, paper, cardboard, soil and other recyclable fractions, depending on the incoming waste.

Residual combustible material may also have the potential to be processed into RDF or SRF, providing another alternative to landfill where suitable end markets exist.

By combining intelligent plant design with advanced separation technology, operators can significantly increase landfill diversion and turn materials previously treated as waste into valuable resources.

Yes.

Turmec designs highly automated waste sorting systems that can substantially reduce the amount of manual picking required.

Depending on the waste stream, technologies such as optical sorters, magnets, eddy current separators, screens and other mechanical separation systems can automatically identify and separate targeted materials.

Manual sorting can then be focused on quality control and areas where human intervention adds the most value.

This can be particularly valuable for waste operators experiencing labour shortages, rising labour costs or difficulties maintaining consistent sorting quality.

Absolutely. A completely new facility isn’t always necessary.

Turmec can assess an existing MRF or recycling plant and identify opportunities to improve capacity, recovery, automation, material purity and operational efficiency.

An upgrade might involve replacing individual pieces of equipment, adding optical sorting, improving screening or separation, introducing new processing stages or redesigning sections of the existing plant.

Turmec has successfully completed upgrades while working around existing operations, helping customers improve plant performance without unnecessarily replacing assets that continue to perform effectively.

The return on investment from recycling automation can come from several areas.

A well-designed plant may help an operator recover more valuable commodities, process more tonnes per hour, reduce manual sorting, lower disposal costs and improve the consistency and purity of saleable outputs.

The exact ROI will depend on factors including waste volumes, gate fees, commodity values, labour costs, landfill or disposal charges and the investment required.

For Turmec, the starting point is therefore not simply “What equipment can we sell?” but “Where can we create additional value within your process?” Talk to Turmec about your next recycling project. contactus@turmec.com

Yes.

Turmec can incorporate Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) production into new or existing recycling plants.

After recyclable commodities have been recovered, suitable remaining combustible materials can potentially be processed into a fuel product for appropriate energy recovery applications.

This creates an additional outlet for material that might otherwise require disposal and can contribute to higher overall landfill diversion.

For waste operators, this means looking beyond recycling alone and considering how value can be extracted from as much of the incoming waste stream as commercially and technically possible. Talk to Turmec about your next recycling project. contactus@turmec.com
