SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel) is a fuel produced by shredding and dehydrating solid waste, typically consisting of combustible components of municipal solid waste (MSW) such as:
- Biodegradable waste: food and kitchen waste, green waste, paper.
- Recyclable material: paper; glass, bottles, cans, metals, certain plastics, fabrics, clothes, etc.
- Inert waste: construction and demolition waste, dirt, rocks, debris.
- Composite wastes: waste clothing, Tetra-Packs, waste plastics such as toys, garden furniture etc.
Solid recovered fuel is a high-quality alternative to fossil fuel produced from mainly commercial and industrial waste. It can be produced to a range of specifications – such as moisture content, calorific value and chemical composition – to meet customer requirements. The recovered fuel has a high calorific value and is used in cement kilns.
Materials with high calorific value such as paper, cardboard, wood and plastics will be separated from the waste stream and used as a fuel source.
